These are marked with a vertical rectangle resembling a door frame. Gateway: These doors take you directly to a gateway that leads to the next biome. They're marked on your minimap like a Main Path, but with a little ring above it. Side Path: These are optional doors that can lead to curiosities, treasures, and more danger. Fights beyond Side Paths tend to be harder than others, and in later biomes you run the risk of walking into a mini-boss fight or a difficult encounter after which it’s difficult to recoup your lost resources. Approach these with caution! You can identify Side Paths by the ‘A’ shape on your minimap. Locked Side Path: These optional doors require one Atropian key to open. As with Locked Containers, using your Atropian key on a Locked Side Path consumes the key. These are marked on your minimap with a second ‘A’ shape nested below the main icon.Ĭontainment Doors: Beyond this path, you’ll fight three waves of enemies that become more difficult after each concurrent waves. The upside to all this is that you’ll get potentially great loot at the end (if you make it to the end). This path carries high risk, but it also offers the potential of high reward. To unlock this, shoot the large parasite nestled on the center of the door. You’ll find these doors marked on your minimap as yellow rectangles with a star above them. Secret Passages: Secret Passages appear as glowing yellow orbs sitting above graves, inside of enclosures, or near statues. Stepping onto the orb drops you into the Secret Passage (check out Secret Passage Types for more info). Vaults: Behind this door is the Vault that contains the arena where you will fight the final boss of the biome that you're currently in. On your way to the boss arena, you may also run into turrets and several Gorgon-like statues that you'll need to avoid being seen by. The icon on the map is displayed as a rectangular red doorframe with a little triforce symbol above it. It’s impossible to know if we’ve seen every Side Path variety in Returnal since every run is different, but here are the most prolific Side Paths you are most likely to find.įabricators: In this Side Path variant, you will find at least one fabricator.

Fabricators are devices that allow you to spend Obolites in exchange for different kinds of items. Some fabricators offer a random item, and others tell you what you're getting for your money. You may also sometimes find a Xenoglyph in this Side Path variant as well.
RECLAIMER RETURNAL FREE
#RETURNAL ORANGE BARRIERS FREE#Īlso, in earlier biomes, the fabricator may give a free upgrade, but most often you'll need to pay a certain number of Obolites in exchange for your shiny new item.

When you die after using the Reconstructor, you will spawn right back in this room! Reconstructor: In this Side Path, you find a Reconstructor a device that allows you to spend a certain amount of Ether in order to get a second life.

Inert Reclaimer: This Side Path contains an Inert Reclaimer, a flat slab where you can rest and restore some of your health (Integrity). You can identify it by the green fluorescent light shining green light on it. Finally, Ether can be traded for Obolites and can also be used to unlock new items. There's a possibility that you will also find parasite pods and other items in here. Ether can be used to cleanse malignancy from an item, allowing it to be picked up without incurring a Suit Malfunction, and it can be used to charge Replicators to give players an extra life. Still, thanks to its many uses, it may be worth the effort.Įther is one of many currencies in Returnal, and with it players can do a lot of things. Because of this, players can farm Ether and end up with a huge stockpile, although it will take quite a bit of time. While all of the player's Obolites will disappear whenever they die and start a new cycle, Ether remains no matter what. The same holds true for currency as well. Unlocking certain upgrades like the Atropian Blade or the Icarian Grapnel give players a permanent boost to their character, so they are very important. In Returnal, few things are permanent, so players are likely to cling onto those things that are.
